DESCRIPTION

Following models of "GIAMBOLOGNA", JEAN DE BOLOGNE (Douai, Flanders, 1529 - Florence, 1608), 19th century.
"Mercury" and "Fortuna".
Bronze.
Measurements: 84 cm.

Set formed by two bronze sculptures, representation of the goddess Fortuna, which presents clear stylistic similarities with a work created by Giovanni Bologna (Giambologna) around 1560, as well as with his famous Mercury, conserved in the Civic Museum of Bologna. Worked in rounded bulk, the artist has sought to translate the lightness of the characters through a bold posture, inspired by the one Giambologna used for his Mercury. The figures balance on the wind coming out of the mouth of a zephyr, defying the laws of gravity. Yet the elegant figures convey a balanced posture, brimming with grace. A slight twist underlines the curves of a supple body, inspired by Italian Renaissance models. On the other hand, the movement, the dynamic composition, adheres to mannerist solutions, of which Giambologna was a representative.
With these works, full of movement, grace, delicacy, where the artist also admirably works the nude, some of the most outstanding contributions of the classical Italian Renaissance are summarized: the recovery of Antiquity, both in the themes and in the forms, the monumental free-standing sculpture or the nude, male and female. On the other hand, the search for movement, dynamism, even the instability of the figure, prelude some aspects of Mannerism and the Baroque trends of the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
