DESCRIPTION

VÍCTOR VARELA (Venezuela, 1927-2013)
Untitled, c. 1972.
Polychrome iron.
Measurements: 112 x 65 x 27 cm (sculpture); 50 x 68.5 x 30 cm (base).
The work is an abstract sculpture built from a rectangular structure that serves as a frame for a composition of geometric shapes in intense colors. Inside the frame, there are elongated and angular figures in blue, red and black, which are arranged vertically in a way that suggests movement and dynamism. In the center of the composition, a vertical line of red figures interspersed with black shapes stands out, contrasting with the blue elements arranged on the sides.
The presence of a yellow circle in the lower right area adds a focal point that contrasts with the straight and angular lines of the piece. This circle could symbolize the sun or some cosmic element, giving a sense of balance amidst the fragmented composition. The work combines geometric elements and primary colors, recalling the constructivist style and emphasizing the relationship between form, color and negative space.

Victor Varela began his artistic education at the Escuela de Artes Plasticas de Maracaibo, although in 1945 he moved to Caracas to study at the Escuela de Artes Plasticas y Aplicadas in the city. In 1952 he moved to Paris to continue his artistic training with artists such as Jean Dewasne, Fernand Leger and Victor Vasarely. Later he returned to Caracas where he developed his artistic career. Throughout his career he exhibited his work internationally in countries such as Colombia, Brazil, United States, Italy (Venice Biennial), Spain, Belgium and China. In 1958 he received the National Prize of Sculpture, in 2002 the Doctorate Honoris Causa of the Catholic University Cecilio Acosta (Maracaibo) and in 2009 the one of the Central University of Venezuela.
