DESCRIPTION

"Soldier at the battle of Marathon, announcing the victory".
Bronze.
Presents signature and stamp of the foundry Ferdinand de Barbedienne.
Measurements: 46 x 51 x 25 cm.
This work fixes its composition and theme in the sculpture made by Jean Pierre Cortot, which is currently in the Louvre Museum. The original, made in marble, was first presented to the public at the Paris Salon in 1822.
Cortot was educated at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, being awarded the Prix de Rome in 1809. During his stay he resided at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1810 to 1813. Cortot worked in an academic neoclassical style, austere and correct, heir to both the French classical models of the late eighteenth century and the Greco-Roman tradition. His art acquired a more romantic expression towards the end of his life. Appointed professor at the École, succeeding Charles Dupaty, he was made a member of the Académie des beaux-arts in 1825, again replacing Dupaty. He was appointed Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1841.
