José Salís Camino was a Spanish landscape painter and engraver, one of the first members of the so-called School of Bidasoa. Born in Santoña, son of a French father and a Basque mother, when he was an orphan he went to live with his family in Irún. He was able to train in Madrid, at the School of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, with Carlos de Haes. In 1885 he traveled to Brussels where he settled for a while and completed his training with Antoine Van Hammée. He passed through Rome and Paris, was in the United Kingdom and visited North Africa before returning to Spain. Close to the luminism of Joaquín Sorolla and the work of Joaquim Mir, he was in his early stages under the influence of Carlos de Haes and, later, of Corotianism. Landscape painting predominates in his painting and, within it, the seascapes. His work shows the influence of impressionism during his stay in Belgium and France. Established in Irun, there he opened his painting and engraving workshop, and participated in all the national exhibitions in Spain that took place between 1895 and the year before his death. He also attended group and individual exhibitions in Paris. He has been considered "one of the main references for the artists of his time and the new generations until his death".
