Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid and at the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville, Mariano García Patiño was a multifaceted artist who cultivated painting as well as engraving, sculpture, drawing and ceramics. His production is grouped into four periods. The first one reaches the 60's and could be called "black period", since it shows the influence of authors such as Goya, Solana, Tàpies, Valdés Leal or El Greco; The second stage of production will cover the decade of the 60's, coinciding with his residence in Barcelona, and consists of works influenced by karmatism, a current that delves into the psychic and physiological need to paint, linking to Freudian theories or orientalism. The presentation of his karmic paintings at the Sala Gaudí in 1970 brought him great success among the public; the third stage consists of his white period, in which groups of people and women are the focus of his production. Stylistically, he returns to the Romanesque roots of Galicia, expressionism and primitivism. The four works belonging to this collection, dated 1990, under the titles Niña, Una joven, Don Quijote and Hombre pensando, are part of this phase. The four are resolved with the presentation of hieratic figures in the foreground of the composition on undefined backgrounds. During the last period of production, García Patiño promoted the creation of pictorial series, dedicated to diverse themes such as illustrious Galicians, Galician saints, tarot or biblical scenes.
