The relationship between the painter and the model is a theme that in the avant-garde of the 20th century is reconsidered, losing the woman the traditional function of placid odalisque. Sensitive painters tended to enter into the psychology of their models, as in this drawing, where shyness and melancholy replace the languor of yesteryear. The synthetic style that chisels the bodies like wood carvings is part of a post-Cubist language, influenced by Art Deco.
