In 1869 Johannes Christian Oertel founded a company for the manufacture of glass for export. The company was established in Haida, center of the glass industry in northern Bohemia. There he was dedicated to innovate in glass finishing techniques, and managed to patent methods for applying colored ornamentation in hollow glass objects.

After the death of Johannes in 1909, the company was left under the direction of his son. Under his management, the company was noted both for its own designs and for collaborations with the renowned Haida College, gaining international renown.

Thanks to its distinctive designs in the Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles, Oertel was able to expand its markets internationally, participating in numerous prestigious exhibitions in North and South America.
