Oxcart ornaments. Shan region, Burma, 19th century.
Teak wood treated with palm oil and metal foot.
Measurements: 94 x 235 cm.
Lot comprising two oxcart rear ornaments, made of teak wood and then dipped in palm oil. Normally, this type of ornament is removed from the cart when it is going to be used in the fields or for transport, and is only placed during religious festivals and weddings.
These Burmese ornaments were traditionally carved from hardwoods and treated with palm wood, and could have all kinds of ornamental motifs. In this case, two small birds with their wings folded and their heads bent forward are seen on the top. The rest of the structure is carved in relief with floral motifs.
