Bust of an apsara in beige sandstone, with bare chest, dressed with a long dhoti and beaded ornaments. The apsaras were aquatic nymphs of the Hindu mythology. They were always depicted around musical elements, as dancers in the court of the demigod Indra in his divine kingdom, Suarga, located on the peak of the sacred mountain Meru.
The Chandela are known for their art and architecture, especially the temples in their original capital, Khajuraho. They also built temples, ponds, palaces and forts elsewhere, such as their forts at Ajaigarh, Kalinjar and their later capital, Mahoba.
