DESCRIPTION

Stool. Kwere culture, Tanzania, late 19th - early 20th century.
Wood.
Cracks on the top.
Measurements: 26,5 cm. height.

African wooden stool with circular seat and legs carved in "V" shape and chiseled with genuine geometric patterns. For the Kwere people, these stools were made for tribal chiefs. They were believed to contain the soul of their owner.

The Kwere live in the Bagamoyo district of the Pwani region of coastal Tanzania. They speak Ngh'wele or Kikwere in Swahili, which is their other language.
