DESCRIPTION

Capital; Andalusia, XV century.
Carved marble.
They show wear.
Measurements: 20 x 31 x 31 cm.
This Andalusian marble capital, dated from the 15th century, is a testimony of the sophisticated fusion of artistic influences that characterized the Hispano-Muslim and Mudejar architecture in the Iberian Peninsula. Carved from a single piece of stone, it presents an elegant and stylized composition that combines classical tradition with Islamic decorative elements, reflecting the survival of Andalusian art even in the late period of the Reconquest.
Its structure follows the general scheme of Corinthian or composite capitals, although reinterpreted with a more austere and geometric language. The reliefs of aviform figures stand out, whose heads emerge from stylized volutes in the corners of the capital, establishing a delicate play of curves and symmetries. These motifs, probably inspired by the vegetal and zoomorphic iconography of Islamic art, denote an ornamental intention based on the stylization and repetition of forms.
The abacus, of sober and well-defined proportions, shows a natural wear that suggests its use in a significant architectural structure, perhaps a palace, a mosque or a civil building. Its polished finish and careful carving are evidence of the mastery of the craftsmen who, despite the political and cultural transformations of the 15th century, continued to work with the aesthetic codes inherited from Al-Andalus.
This capital is not only a functional architectural piece, but also a vestige of the ornamental richness that characterized the transition between the Islamic tradition and the progressive assimilation of Western models in the Andalusian art of the late Middle Ages.
