DESCRIPTION
Large sculpture of the God Amun protecting Tutankhamun after Ancient Egyptian models, 21st century.
Plaster and pigments.
Provenance: Private collection, France.
Size: 220 x 44 x 78 cm.
Large sculpture of the God Amun protecting Tutankhamun made entirely in plaster and black pigments. Formally, it follows the artistic parameters of the sculpture of the same characteristics, although made in black diorite, housed in the Louvre Museum. The sculpture in the French museum, dated to the New Empire (c.1336-132 BC), is faithful to the aesthetic parameters that defined Egyptian art, presenting us with a god with a soft, feminised face, a common feature of the portraits of this dynasty. Amon wears his traditional headdress dominated by two tall vertical feathers, while the braided beard of the gods adorns his chin.
Amon was originally a Theban deity, popularised from the 17th Dynasty onwards. In the later period he acquired a universal character, being known by the Greek name of Amun-Ra-Sonter (king of the gods).
