BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Indian School, early 20th century.
"Portraits of Mughal emperors".
Pair of oil paintings in tempera on paper glued to board.
They present damages in the frame.
Measurements: 93 x 61 cm; 129 x 89 cm (frame).
Pair of portraits of dignitaries or Mughal emperors resolved with a contrasted palette and a linear drawing that stylizes the semblances and ennobles the characters. We recognize Sha Jahan I (1592-1666), who was the 5th Mughal emperor of India, son of Emperor Jahangir and his wife Bibi Bilqis Makani (Jodh Bai), Rajput princess of Marwar (Jodhpur). For most of his reign, until 1648, his capital was Agra. But then she moved to Delhi, when she undertook the reconstruction of Shahjahanabad, the Delhi fort, another of her great works. But what he is most remembered for is for having the Peacock Throne carved and especially for erecting the famous Taj Mahal. Other of his works were: the Friday Mosque in Delhi, the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore, the mosque that bears his name in Sind and the tomb of his favorite daughter Jahanara Begum, unique jewels of Mughal culture.
