Figure entirely carved in ivory, with engraved and inked details, following a meticulous style and attention to detail, precious, revealing the influence of Chinese eboraria. It represents an immortal. The Japanese term okimono means "object for display", "art object" or "decorative object". Such objects are traditionally placed in the tokonoma, a prominent place in the home, usually in the form of a niche, or on the Buddhist home altar. The okimono is exclusively decorative and during the Meiji period many okimono were manufactured for export to the West.
Within the Japanese artistic history, the Edo period stands out as one of the most important, due to the political and social changes that took place.
