BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Set of four Satsuma vases, Meiji period, 19th century.
Polychrome and glazed Kinkozan porcelain.
With seals on the base.
Measurements: 25 cm (height) x 15 cm (largest diameter).

Set of four Satsuma vases, a Japanese style but of great Korean influence, born in the eighteenth century. It will acquire however a greater importance in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, being a type mainly intended for export. The terracotta is covered with a feldspathic glaze that, when fired, cracks, resulting in a fine cracking that occupies the entire surface of the piece. This cracking was essential, since it helped to fix the glazes to the surface. The most characteristic feature of the Satsuma type is its decorative richness, with motifs generally brushed in gold and a very varied polychrome. In addition, very thick glazes are used, with a lot of relief, as can be seen here.
