DESCRIPTION

Masai bag. Kenya, East Africa, 20th century.
Leather, colored beads, mother-of-pearl buttons.
Provenance: Colette Ghysels, Brussels.
Measurements: 43 x 52,5 cm.

This type of bags are called "Olbene" in the Masai culture. Women used these leather bags to store water or other valuable objects, such as jewelry. As on this occasion, they were sometimes decorated with beads and shells as the Masai love to decorate their objects with beads and cauris (animal coins).
