The Paracas culture is the predecessor of the Nazca, with which it shows an evident cultural affinity. Developed in the ancient Peru in the period denominated Superior Formative or Early Horizon, it had its development in the peninsula of Paracas, in the region of Ica, between 700 and 200 B.C. Its more outstanding artistic manifestation was the textile production, with pieces of high quality in wool and cotton, although its pottery and its basketry also stand out. The main example of Paracas textile art is found in the tombs of Cerro Colorado, where textiles made from cotton and camelid wool have been found, often combined with human hair and vegetable fibers. The threads were dyed with various pigments, although the fabrics were also colored once they were finished weaving. They were also masters of embroidery. In the Paracas fabrics we can find all kinds of decorations, from the representation of mythical beings to symbolic motifs, generally following rigid geometric compositions.
