BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Set of bracelet and necklace; Celtic culture and Frankish people, 4th century BC-6th century AD.
Silver.
Measurements: 6 cm (bracelet); 43 cm (necklace length).
Bracelet of the Celtic culture and Frankish necklace made in silver from several united rods, of square section, melted and twisted, with the ends flattened with a hammer. Although it is an early medieval piece, it is based on the ancient torque, a rigid and round necklace, open at the front and with decorated ends, which was used by various peoples of the Bronze Age, from the second millennium to about 300 BC, including the Galatians, several Germanic tribes of Scythia and the Persians.
The Franks were a community of peoples from Lower Rhineland and the territories immediately east of the Rhine who, like many other West Germanic tribes, became part of the Roman Empire in its last stage, as "Foederati", settling in the Limes, a territory encompassing present-day Belgium and northern France. The powerful and long-lasting dynasties established by the Franks ruled over a wide area that came to encompass France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the Franconia region of Germany.
