Collection; Eric Vaule (Connecticut USA).
Measurements: 17,5 x 7 cm; 29 x 16,5 x 8 cm.
Pair of bronze fibulae decorated with blue glass beads. Semicircular heads with seven-fingered crown, decorated with waves and crosses.
Merovingian art (5th-8th centuries) developed during the reign of the Merovingian Franks in Western Europe and was influenced by late Roman, Germanic and Christian art. It is characterized by its abstract and ornamental style, with emphasis on geometric patterns and Christian symbology.
One of its highlights is metalwork, especially fibulae (brooches used to fasten garments). These fibulae, made of gold, silver or bronze, were richly decorated with filigree, engravings and precious stones, reflecting the status of their owner. A common design was the eagle or ribbon-shaped fibula, a symbol of power and prestige.
