BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Mesosaur tusk fossil.
60 million years old.
Measurements: 2.5 x 13 x 3 cm.
The mesosaur fossil tusk (a primitive aquatic reptile) is an interesting find because these animals had specialized dentition: long, thin teeth, ideal for catching fish and small crustaceans. Although they were not large predators, mesosaurs used their fangs to grasp slippery prey in their aquatic habitat. They were among the first reptiles fully adapted to aquatic life. Their fossils have been found in Africa and South America, which helped to prove the theory of continental drift, since both continents were united in the supercontinent Gondwana.
