Olmecs, Teotihuacans, Toltecs and Aztecs were the main pre-Columbian peoples of the current central zone of Mexico. The Olmec, known as the mother culture of Mesoamerica, produced some of the earliest terracottas in Central Mexico. Their terracotta sculptures often depict human and animal figures with distinctive features, such as large heads and expressive facial features. The Teotihuacan civilization, famous for the monumental city of Teotihuacan, also created terracottas. These terracottas usually represent divinities, supernatural beings and important characters. They stand out for their elaboration and religious symbolism. The Toltecs, a civilization later than Teotihuacan, continued the tradition of terracottas. Their representations include human and zoomorphic figures, standing out for their naturalistic and expressive style.
