DESCRIPTION
Verdure tapestry; following 17th century Flemish models; 20th century.
Wool.
Measurements: 223.5 x 390 cm.
This tapestry is a good example of a classic verdure tapestry, such as those woven in the traditional areas of Flanders, Brussels and Audenarde during the 17th century. Tapestries known as "verdure" were woven between the 16th and 18th centuries, with designs based on plant forms reflecting the interest in botanical subjects during this period. The subject matter of Verdure style tapestries had a purely ornamental function in interior decoration, creating an illusion of space and suggesting a retreat into the scene, providing an effect of distance and perspective. Many Verdure tapestries were woven in Audenarde, and this important weaving area came to be patronized by the aristocracy.
This tapestry is woven according to 17th century patterns, created by skilled weavers, who keep alive the centuries-old tradition of tapestry making from generation to generation. This tapestry is fully lined and incorporates a sheath at the top for hanging with a Hines rod. Alternatively, this tapestry can be hung with a wooden strip which is a concealed hanging method.
