Rug; MIGUEL STUYCK, Spain, 20th century.
Wool and cotton.
Signed Miguel Stuyck.
Measurements: 150 x 200 cm.
Handmade wool rug, which presents a yellow ochre field on which is arranged a neoclassical-inspired design. A rosette, inscribed in a medallion as a vegetal garland, dominates the center. This is surrounded by a chain of vegetal and geometric motifs inherited from classicist aesthetics. Finally, the field is delimited by the border, through a motif in the form of a fretwork in blue. The border has three bands, two thinner and simpler in terms of decoration and a central one decorated with an aesthetic of rhythmic character.
The Stuyck family, given their experience in the art of weaving, would take over from the master directors brought directly from Flanders to the Royal Tapestry Factory in Madrid. The Stuycks would exercise the artistic direction from the 18th century until the dawn of the 21st century. It was in 1786 when Miguel Stuyck, a descendant of Jacobo, asked the king for permission for his nephew to weave "Turkish" carpets (knotted, not woven like a tapestry). These first carpets will be in the Charles IV style, a language very indebted to French classicism, with Hispanic touches and sometimes certain influences of the Empire style.
