This French Empire style clock is an imposing and dramatic piece, which combines high quality materials and a bold sculptural narrative, typical of the early nineteenth century. The base is made of Belgian black marble, with a stepped design that gives it presence and elegance. This type of dark marble contrasts magnificently with the gilded elements and bronze sculpture, highlighting the details in a majestic way.
The legs of this clock are crafted in gilded bronze, designed in the shape of acanthus leaves, a classic Empire style motif that adds a touch of strength and dynamism to the base and harmonizes with the other bronze appliqués located in the corners or on the outer area of the dial.
The dial of the watch is located at the top of the base, in a central position that allows it to be clearly seen, surrounded by a delicately worked bronze border. The sober dial features black Roman numerals and Breguet-style hands, maintaining the classic elegance of the watch.
Above the dial, a bronze sculptural group is the focal point of the piece. The scene depicts a dramatic combat between two knights: a rider, with a determined gesture, is killing another knight who has fallen from his horse. This sculptural group evokes scenes of heroism and conflict, very much in tune with the warlike and patriotic spirit of the Empire style, inspired by the figure of Napoleon and the French military epic.
Nineteenth-century bronze table clocks were key pieces in decoration and interior design, as well as symbols of social status and refinement. Elaborately crafted and often adorned with artistic motifs, these clocks not only served to measure time, but also reflected the technical advances and taste for fine craftsmanship of the time. Bronze, a durable and aesthetically appreciated material, allowed the creation of complex and elegant forms, integrating styles such as neoclassical or rococo, which made them highly valued objects in the residences of high society.
