BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish school; XIX century.
"Immaculate".
Embossed and chiseled silver.
Presents sinking in the upper area and loss of the crown.
Measurements: 36 x 11,5 x 12 cm; 18,5 x 20 x 20 cm (base).
This 19th century Spanish silver sculpture represents the Immaculate Conception and faithfully follows the models established by Alonso Cano, evoking a style that combines delicacy and spirituality. The figure stands gracefully on an ornate and detailed base, reflecting the technical virtuosity of the artisans of the time.
The Virgin is depicted in a classical pose, with her hands together in an attitude of prayer and a serene face that conveys purity and devotion. Her tunic and mantle are richly decorated with vegetal motifs engraved in the silver, showing a meticulous attention to detail that enhances her sacred character. The draping of the folds of the robe gives a sense of soft, ethereal movement.
The sculpture rises above a cloud adorned with cherub heads, a characteristic element of the representations of the Immaculate inspired by Alonso Cano. The faces of the cherubs are delicate and expressive, adding a celestial air to the work and emphasizing the connection between the Virgin and the divine.
The richly worked base combines curved forms and ornamental motifs of baroque style, underlining the artistic influence of previous centuries, adapted with the refined sensibility of the 19th century. This pedestal not only brings stability to the figure, but also frames the composition with solemn elegance.
This piece is an example of how Spanish religious art continued to reinterpret canonical ideals, preserving their symbolic and aesthetic richness, while adapting to the tastes of the time.
