BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Flemish school of the XVII century.
"Still life of flowers".
Oil on canvas.
Relined.
With 19th century stretcher frame.
Measurements: 92 x 102 cm; 103 x 113 cm (frame).

It is possible to relate this floral still life, exuberant in its variety and splendor (roses, carnations, daisies, hibiscus...), with the vibrant compositions of Cornelis de Heem and Rachel Ruysch, outstanding exponents of this genre in the Dutch Golden Age. The blackness of the background favors the almost three-dimensional work of the sensual corollas, modeled with precision, rooting themselves in bouquets. A small bird with its wings spread, perched on the ledge, is about to take flight. A red ceramic pot with a handle in the shape of a winged creature also appears among the flowers. The painting is in the tradition of the floral still lifes of the Flemish school of the 17th century, a genre that reached great splendor during the Baroque period. These compositions are characterized by the meticulous and detailed representation of a wide variety of flowers, captured at their peak of maturity and accompanied by additional elements such as birds, insects or ornamental vessels. These paintings were not only appreciated for their aesthetic beauty, but also for their symbolic content. The flowers, in an advanced state of bloom, represented the transience of life and the ephemeral nature of beauty, recurring themes in Baroque art.
