BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Penknife, Andalusia; c. 1880.
Steel blade, brass and shaft.
Presents inscription.
Measurements: 65 x 6 x 2 cm (open); 35 cm (closed).
Andalusian knife in whose leaf the inscription can be read "I do not lend myself nor I give myself, alone of my duel I am, 1880". The knife already exists in Roman times, but its use will extend especially from the sixteenth century, when it soon became an indispensable weapon to ensure security against a possible unexpected attack. During this time, certain weapons, such as swords and sabers, were reserved for the noble class and the militia, and could not be used by ordinary citizens. Hence the rapid success of the penknife, a weapon that despite its smaller size had the advantage of doubling its length when opened, while weighing less. It was therefore easier to conceal and carry, as well as being equally effective.
