DESCRIPTION
Pair of cups; North America, early nineteenth century.
Wood and carved coco with bronze applications.
One of them has a small crack.
Measurements. 22 x 10 x 10 cm.
This elegant pair of North American neoclassical goblets, made of coco, stands out for its refined design and its use of exotic materials, reflecting the influence of the neoclassical taste in the decorative craftsmanship of the 18th and 19th century.
The cups have an ovoid shape, taking advantage of the natural curvature of the coco, mounted on square bases with small metal spheres at the corners, giving them stability and an air of sophistication. The lid, richly carved with a stylized leaf motif, is topped by a small metal knob, adding a subtle contrast of materials.
These pieces were popular among the elites of the time, who appreciated exotic and handcrafted objects. The use of coco, imported from tropical regions, indicates the connection to the transatlantic trade and the interest in rare materials in domestic decoration. Its neoclassical design, characterized by symmetry and sobriety of form, reflects the aesthetics inspired by classical antiquity that predominated in the art and decoration of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
