This sculpture of Galileo Pochini, made in alabaster, represents a young woman in serene and contemplative attitude, leaning on a stone wall while holding an amphora. Her relaxed pose and the subtle inclination of her body evoke a genre scene, possibly inspired by the classical and orientalist tradition, an artistic trend that was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The female figure stands out for its delicate technical execution, with a refined modeling of the facial features and the meticulous elaboration of the folds of her dress, which seems to fit smoothly to the body. The artist has taken advantage of the translucent and chromatic qualities of alabaster to give the work a sense of softness and naturalism, especially in the skin and the fine textures of the dress.
Galileo Pochini was an Italian sculptor celebrated for his work in finely carved marble and alabaster. He made mostly female portraits of neoclassical inspiration, although already anticipating some solutions at the end of the century.
