BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school of the XVIII century.
"Saint Peter" and "Saint Paul".
Pair of sculptures carved in half bulk, gilded and polychrome.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use. Presents faults in the polychrome and wood.
Measurements: 52 x 30 x 15 cm.

This pair of Italian busts of the XVIII century, carved in wood and polychromed with golden details, represent the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Both figures bow their heads slightly, exhibiting curly hair and beards framing their angular faces with straight noses. Their fleshy, half-open lips and half-closed eyelids convey an expression of beatitude and rapture, achieved with remarkable verism. The golden cloaks, draped with masterly drapery, cover tunics tight to the waist, bringing dynamism and movement to the sculptures. Originally, they carried additional attributes that have been lost over time, apart from the bible that one of them holds in one hand. These works are representative of the late baroque, characterized by its emphasis on emotionality, realism and theatricality. The attention to detail in the carving and polychromy of these busts reflects the ability of 18th century Italian artisans to combine religious devotion with an aesthetic that seeks to move and engage the viewer, hallmarks of the Italian Baroque.

St. Peter and St. Paul are central figures in the Christian tradition. St. Peter is often depicted holding a key, a symbol of his authority in the Church, although in this case he holds a Bible. St. Paul, known for his evangelizing work and his epistles, is often depicted with a sword and a book.
