DESCRIPTION

Spanish school of the 20th century.
"Christ Crucified with Mary at the foot of the Cross".
Carved and polychrome wood. The figure of the Virgin is Cap i pota (only the head and hands is wood). Silk dress. Orla of golden metal).
Measurements: 106 x 50 x 30 cm.

The image of Christ crucified on a wooden Latin cross presides over the group. The evident singularity of the figures gives place to an image that deepens in the religiosity of the faithful through a realistic finish, and of singular beauty, that is defined through a remarkable technical treatment, that is appreciated in the quality of the folding of the fabrics or the subtlety of the faces of the protagonists, that in spite of tending to the realism show certain idealization. Normally since Gothic art, extending the model until later times, in the sculptural sets referring to Calvary, the figure of Christ Crucified is usually represented, the image of the Virgin normally on the right side, and St. John on the left side. However, in this sculptural representation we are presented with the figure of Christ on a cross with three nails and only the Virgin at his feet on the right. This last figure is of the typology "cap i pota" or figures to dress. They are figures that were often used in processions, in this case it is a figure intended for private devotion, given its small size. The visible parts are covered with a thin layer of stucco and polychrome, while the rest is covered by real clothes. They are images that were especially liked for their naturalism, since by wearing authentic clothes a greater degree of realism was achieved than with the simply carved ones, which often did not have enough quality to achieve that degree of naturalism, so sought after in religious art since the Baroque period.
