Devotional image in which the Virgin is represented as a child leaning on her mother St. Anne, who with one hand embraces her daughter and with the other hand points upwards indicating her daughter her destiny. Although the image does not have many elements, an open book can be seen in the lower left area, indicating that both St. Anne and the Virgin are educated women. This is a traditional theme framed within the cycle of the Virgin's life, a scene that highlights the importance of Saint Anne's role as educator, guide and protector of little Mary. This theme was very common, especially in the 17th century, as a result of the Counter-Reformation. Because Protestants questioned Mary's virginity and her role as intercessor before God, Marian themes were especially cultivated by artists in Catholic countries. Hence the Immaculate Conception became so fashionable, and numerous scenes related to the Virgin's life were made.
